Why Choose A Jackshaft Opener

The MJ3800MYQ mounts on the wall beside the door and drives the torsion bar directly, rather than running a rail across your ceiling. That frees the entire ceiling for storage, suits garages with bulkheads, low clearance or raked ceilings, and removes the rail and trolley entirely.

Everything needed is in the box. Wi-Fi is built into the opener, so there is no myQ Gateway to buy. Battery backup is integrated rather than optional. Safety beams, the automatic door lock, cable tension monitor and Smart Control Panel are all included.

Check before ordering: this opener needs a torsion bar 25mm in diameter with 8 to 12cm drums, and at least 216mm of side room between the wall and the end of the torsion bar. It is not compatible with reverse wound drums.

First introduced in 2012, the Merlin Jackshaft series, also known as the “MJ” series, are a different kind of garage door opener. Traditionally sectional doors are opened by a motor on a rail running back across the ceiling, which needs clear space free of bulkheads and obstructions. A jackshaft mounts to the wall beside the door and drives the torsion bar directly, freeing the ceiling for storage and suiting garages with low or raked ceilings.

The Commander Ultimate handles sectional doors up to 16.5m², 4.2m high and 130kg, rising to 230kg with the included Safety IR Beams fitted. A quiet wall mounted DC motor removes the noise and vibration that a ceiling mounted opener transmits through the floor above, which matters if there is a bedroom or living area over the garage.

myQ Wi-Fi is built into the opener rather than needing a separate gateway. Set schedules, get real time alerts when the door opens, closes or is left open, share guest access with up to five people, and check the door status from anywhere. Timer to Close automatically shuts the door after a set period, and both features work because the Protector System safety beams are already included.

The integrated battery backup keeps the door working through a power cut. The automatic door lock throws a bolt through the track once the door is fully closed, and the cable tension monitor stops the door moving if it detects slack in the cables. The supplied E960M remotes use Security+ 2.0 rolling code encryption across three frequencies, sending a new code with every press.

Note that older Merlin remote controls are not compatible with this opener. Only Security+ 2.0 accessories can be programmed to it.
