Is The LR Drive Right For Your Door?
The LR Drive is a light commercial operator, not a domestic one. It suits shopfronts, warehouses, storage units, workshops and larger residential roller doors that a standard opener cannot move.
Check three things before ordering. Your door must be corrugated sheet, spring balanced and under 270kg. Curtain area must be within 28m², dropping to 22m² if the door is windlocked. And the duty cycle is rated at 50 cycles per day, so for a busier opening than that you need a full commercial operator rather than light commercial.
If your door is a standard residential roller under 18m², the Merlin MR855MYQ SilentDrive Elite will handle it for considerably less.
The LR Drive replaced the Merlin MRC950 and MRC950EVO in 2018. If you are replacing either of those, this is the direct upgrade.
Recommended Add-Ons
myQ Smartphone Bundle adds phone control, scheduling and alerts. On a commercial door this is genuinely useful, letting you check the shop is shut from home. Note myQ requires monitored entrapment protection, so the safety beams in the bundle are not optional here.
Battery backup is already included with this opener, so nothing further is needed there.

Grifco LR Drive Opener Features
The Grifco GLD-RDO LR Drive was introduced in 2018 as the replacement for the Merlin MRC950 and MRC950EVO light commercial roller door openers. Grifco is the commercial and industrial arm of Merlin, and the LR Drive was designed specifically for large and windlocked roller doors.
Speed is where it stands apart. It opens a 2.4m high door in 21 seconds, which Grifco rate as fastest in its class, and that matters on a shopfront opening and closing through the day. The motor and gearbox deliver 1300N, enough for corrugated doors up to 28m² and 270kg.
The housing is unusually thin for a commercial operator, needing only 45mm of side room with the battery backup mounted below the motor. That thin profile is what lets it fit installations where a conventional commercial unit will not.
Dedicated open and close terminals make it suitable for shopfront roller grilles where separate controls are needed, rather than the single toggle input a domestic opener offers. Battery backup is included rather than optional, so the door keeps working through a power cut.
The included E960G remote controls use Security+ 2.0 rolling code encryption, generating a new code each time a button is pressed. By transmitting across three frequencies they all but eliminate interference, and the rolling code stops code grabbing devices replaying the signal to open your door.
Two installation notes from Grifco: remove any hand chains before fitting, and do not use extension poles with the LR Drive.
